Commitment in contemporary art
Mirjam Westen (Curator Museum of Modern Art Arnhem)
In the nineties artists (again) questioned the homogeneous or hermetical perspective on art. They were searching for new ways to transfer ideas. Installations, multimedia arts, performances and interventions in public space are just some of the examples that are being used since 1990. Emphasis is on content and concept. Commitment, cooperation and communication are important perspectives. Language- and power-structure, ecology and globalization, the Western Consumption Society became an issue for many artists. Exhibitions and works of art showed will illustrate the explanation of this development.
