2 years after entering WTO, what is the agricultural and rural situation in China?

For thousands of years China has been a country of farmers. The place that China is conquering in the international political and economical configuration is shaking the main ratios that characterised the Chinese situation for decades: urban / rural populations, food / cash crops, local / national and international markets, etc. Despite difficulties in collecting reliable statistical data, this lecture is aimed to make clear the main political options taken recently by the Chinese Government regarding rural and agricultural questions. It will emphasize on the negative and positive effects of China’s WTO membership on farming and rural economy. It will also consider how the new Chinese agricultural features bring new challenges to other agricultural economies as in the EU.

Cheng international program includes an MBA, the MSc in Agribusiness and Consulting. Partners of the MSc in Agribusiness are FESIA (a consortium of five French Ecoles, including ISA Lille) and YAU (Yunnan Agricultural University).The purpose of the MSc in Agribusiness is to train future agriculture and agro-industrial company managerial staff. They learn how to manage the financial and human aspects of their companies and to analyse the consequences of growing globalisation and international competition on their business activity. The strategic analysis tools studied here will also take requirements of product quality and the organisation of production sectors into consideration. The MSc in Agribusiness also fully deals with the inter-cultural question by adapting its content and teaching methods to the particular context of China now being opened up on the international level. The MSc in Agribusiness is addressed to Chinese students who plan on working in their country for national and international companies, as well as to students from other South East Asian and Western countries who are oriented towards business activity in China. For this reason the training program is given in the heart of the concerned region, on the campus of the University of Agriculture of Yunnan, in Kunming in China.
