INREF is the Interdisciplinary Research and Education Fund of Wageningen University focusing on developing countries.

The largest part of the problem-based research is carried out by ‘sandwich’ PhD students who work together in groups in southern countries addressing important, topical issues. Besides the generation of knowledge, the INREF programme aims to strengthen the institutional research, development and education capacities in the south. This includes the development of new interdisciplinary and participatory approaches.

Goals INREF
The goals of the programme are:

  • to stimulate research results that makes an actual difference to the perceived end users (universities, researchers, policy officials, NGOs, farmers, etc.);
  • to carry out and stimulate innovative, interdisciplinary (beta-gamma) and comparative (north-south, south-south) research within Wageningen University and Wageningen UR;
  • to strengthen the education programmes concerning interdisciplinary subjects within Wageningen University and partnering institutions;
  • to exploit and expand the network of strategic, international partners;
  • to attract additional funding.
