Working inside the peace process in Colombia has given Kees Koonings (Utrecht University) a unique opportunity to observe the demilitarisation and reintegration of armed groups in what has become one of Latin America’s longest standing conflicts. He will analyse the Uribe Government peace strategy and the role of various stakeholders as he explains the problems that the peace process has encountered. What does the disarmament of ex-paramilitaries and other groups mean for the future of conflict resolution in Colombia? What are the mechanics of this conflict and what is the route to its resolution?
