The main objective of this thesis was to assess constraints and opportunities for fruit production systems in South Patagonia, with emphasis on sweet cherry. Attention was paid to the description and quantification of the trade-off between yield and fruit quality in cherry orchards, examining options for improved management to reduce yield and quality variability, exploring potentials of other fruit production systems for complementing cherry, and analysing the trade-offs between potentially conflicting objectives at farm level before taking long-term decisions. The main emphasis in the study was on the development of tools in support of transparent discussions on effects of strategic and tactical decisions. These tools constitute a significant contribution to the fruit industry in South Patagonia to support growers, extensionists and researchers in developing structured thinking for analysing and processing available (fragmented) information. This thesis incorporates new concepts in fruit sciences and constitutes a starting point for fruit and farming systems research in South Patagonia.
