Research for this study on the linkages between environmental variables, livelihood options and activities,  household food (in)security and nutritional status of household members, was carried out in two villages in Leyte, the Philippines, that are located in poor, less-favored areas. The bio¬physical environment, different for the two villages, was the starting point of the analysis, the  household the level of analysis. Hypotheses concerning the nature of the relation¬s between biophysical parameters, agricultural productivity, livelihood diversification, and indicators of food availability, access and (in)adequacy, were tested. The study shows clearly that food insecurity is a multi-facetted problem, involving environmental factors, availability of opportunities for generating off-farm and non-farm income, and effectiveness of livehood strategies. The study also demonstrates the importance of home gardens for nutritient adequacy and the lack of a straightforward relationship between house¬hold income and people’s nutritional status.
