Organisation: STUDIUM GENERALE

Are human rights still universal? Should they be? Does it matter if States bypass international agreements? Is it desirable to have more regional variations of justice tribunals? Are human rights eroded or locally more meaningful than ever? What do Sharia,  Guantanamo  or Gacaca justice systems mean for the universalism of Human Rights? These thorny but essential questions are hot topics. Prof. Willem van Genugten will explore the shifting sands that have brought about different ways of approaching human rights internationally. He will confront historical shifts in approaches to human rights and evaluate what they mean for the future of human rights theory and practice. Join field experts from Peace Brigades International and the former interim director of Amnesty International  (Nederland) responding to this presentation. Debate together the slippery slope of human rights.
