Plants have developed defence mechanisms to deal with attacks from herbivorous insects. To gain more insight in the way plants defend themselves, white cabbage cultivars and wild black mustard were infested with two economically important pests: caterpillars and aphids. The aim of this project was to identify and characterize genes that play a role in defence against these insects. Experiments were performed to examine herbivore performance and the regulation of genes in the plant. The results show that variation among plants from the same family as well as from the same species has a strong impact on their interaction with herbivores both at the molecular and ecological level. This holds for both glasshouse as well as field conditions. This thesis forms the basis for further unravelling defence mechanisms of white cabbage.
