Enhancing the size of a flatfish stock by releasing artificially reared individuals is the subject of present thesis, using turbot as example. First part deals with theoretical consideration and matter of principles that should be taken into account in order to optimize the likelihood of a success. Next a large scale stock enhancement program is analyzed and the importance of a correct release habitat evaluated. Last part of present thesis is dealing with the actual release strategy. A method based on diffusion theory is set up in order to provide a correct way of estimating the mortality during the very first period of liberty. A high mortality was observed and methods to circumventing this loss of fish exploited, first by altering the size of the individuals released and later by applying a conditioning experiment designed in such a way that the individuals, intended for release, adapted a burying behavior.
