SENSE / EPCEM Symposium on:
Emerging Issues and Future Challenges in Environmental Sciences
Special Guest: Prof. Bert Brunekreef, Laureate of the Heineken Prize for the Environmental Sciences 2008
Global Environmental Change causes increasing pressures both on our social and ecosystems. Our big challenge for the future is to find a suitable road map to sustainable development. But that road is paved with many risks, uncertainties and different opinions. In the plenary session our special guest, Prof. Bert Brunekreef (winner of the Heineken Prize for the Environmental Sciences 2008) will focus on the possible health effects of exposure to the so-called Atmospheric Brown Cloud. The other keynote speakers in the morning programme will present their view on the relevance of the current concept of sustainable development (Prof. Egbert Tellegen) and the complicated case of biomass certification for energy production (Prof. Helias Udo de Haes).
In the afternoon parallel sessions about 40 SENSE PhD students and some former EPCEM students will present the most striking results of their PhD research and experiences in environmental management.
The attendance at the symposium is free. We would like to ask you to send an e-mail to Johan.Feenstra@wur.nl if you want to attend the plenary morning session and / or the afternoon parallel sessions.
SENSE and EPCEM
This symposium is organised by the Netherlands Research School for the Socio-Economic and Natural Sciences of the Environment (SENSE; www.sense.nl) in close cooperation with former EPCEM students (European Post-Graduate Course on Environmental Management). SENSE is a joint venture of environmental research groups from eight Dutch universities and UNESCO-IHE (Delft). The SENSE Research School is dedicated to providing an excellent supportive network for junior and senior researchers in order to conduct high quality disciplinary and multidisciplinary research in the socio-economic and natural sciences of the environment, as well as to train and educate highly qualified environmental researchers and professionals.
