Physical activity contributes to both physical and mental health and well being, improves the quality of life and reduces the risk for a large number of noncommunicable diseases and mortality. A general consensus has been reached on the amount and type of physical activity recommended to improve and maintain health: for adults at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on at least 5 days of the week. For youth the recommendation is 60 minutes each day of the week.
