22 Apr 2009
Unit: Wageningen University
Organisation: Wageningen Environmental Platform

Since 1970, every year April 22nd is dedicated to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. On this day groups of people around the globe organise creative celebrations to honour our beautiful planet. It’s a day of remembrance of the fact that all people are indigenous to Planet Earth and of our shared responsibility to take care of it. Within this framework WEP will organise some creative activities on both Earth Day, Wednesday April 22nd, and Sunday, 26th April. On Earth Day itself we will ride the tricycle to the Wageningen market square to hand out free organic flower seeds from de Bolster to grow flowers that are pollinated by bees. This will create an infrastructure in the city that enables solitary bees to forage more easily and at the same time the beautiful flowers will inspire the people that grow them: a free service of Mother Nature!

On April 26th (after the exam week) a creative Earth Day Celebration will be held at Droevendaal. At 1500hrs the first round of workshops will start, followed by a second round at 1630hrs. There will be free vegetarian soup at around 1830hrs, after which there will be live music on the field and later a Party for Bees, with good vibes from the resident DJs.

A selection of the finest workshops and excursions:

  • Create your own cleaning agents from natural ingredients
  • Learn how to make baskets from willow twigs
  • Learn how to recycle art
  • Go for a walk around the area, with an expert guide and find which of the wild plants are edible (some recipes will be shared as well)
  • Go on a bee excursion with the Droef bee keeper and find yourself in a wondrous world of organised insect societies
  • Calculate your own personal ecological footprint
  • Watch some interesting documentaries about permaculture and other Earth related issues

These and many more activities will be open to anyone interested. Come to actively participate or just hang around on the field and enjoy the joyful atmosphere!

Do not hesitate to bring Earth-inspired hobbies and instruments!
