The vast use of antibiotics in cattle-breeding is a serious risk for consumers, because of increasing resistance to antibiotics and the end up of residues in animal products. At this moment, animal products are only checked for the presence of antibiotics after processing and distribution. This can be improved by the use of fast biosensors for the measurement of antibiotics in food production processes, e.g. in a slaughterhouse or dairy factory. The sensors developed uses antibodies and are very specific, fast, robust, easy applicable and automated and require only simple handling of the materials to be tested. The biosensors work with diluted milk and with blood (indicative for the concentrations of antibiotics in tissue). By the use of serially coupled sensor channels and of smart (group-specific) antibodies, several antibiotics can be measured simultaneously. It is even possible to measure other contaminants, such as bacteria, at the same time. The during the research applied biosensors are expensive, but, meanwhile, the obtained knowledge is applied in more affordable machines which are also capable of combining more assays, and, by that, we can make our food safer.
