Dr.M.(Marc) G.M. van Roosmalen, Hero of the Planet (Times magazine), Officier in de Orde van de Gouden Ark.

If Darwin lived today, and collected so many species, he would be put in prison!!

This happened to the Dutch biologist/ecologist Marc van Roosmalen because of his efforts to protect the Amazon from deforestation. As most of you will know, the causes of rainforest destruction are (1) population pressure by people migrating from the south, (2) the planting of sugar cane (for biofuel), (3) the increasing number of oil palm plantations and (4) the planting of soya (for the McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets that are sold to millions of people every week in Europe).

Marc van Roosmalen effected conservation of parts of the Amazon together with Nature Conservation Organizations. He tried to safe biotopes of rare animals by the acquisition of large areas of forest with the help of his Amazon Association for the Preservation of high biodiversity areas (AAP). But!!

The powerful real estate developers, investment bankers and government agencies had different plans with the Amazon. They exploded into a rage about this activities and, while be foaming with anger, they accused him from illegal actions. In 2007, at the age of 60years, he was put into prison and suspended 16 years. However, after 18 months he was cleared of almost all allegations by a federal court.

Dr.Marc van Roosmalen is a world renowned researcher of fauna and flora in the Amazon (Brasil, Suriname, Guyana). His interest is the interaction of plant and animal species connected with the biophysical parameters of the river basin. Bestseller still is his guide “A guide to the fruits of the Amazonian rainforest” a must for every biologist visiting the area.
