Functions of the Dutch and also European countryside are ever changing. Where previously the agrarian function was dominant, now functions like nature, living and water storage are getting more important. These and other changes of functions of the countryside lead to developments that take place more and more in an integrated way. Besides, decreasing population at the countryside is getting an important problem.
Friday 16 October 2009 the Rural Wageningen Foundation (RUW) organises a Symposium titled ‘The Rural Idyll’. At this Symposium different actors will present their ‘Rural Idyll’ of the Dutch and European countryside and discuss how this could be accomplished.
Prof. Martin Kropff will open the Symposium, followed by keynote presentations: Prof. Han Wiskerke (Rural Sociology, WUR), Atty Bruins (LNV), Jan Huijgen (Demonstration Company ‘Eemlandhoeve’) and Wilma van Meteren (Trouw – Series ‘Save the Countryside’). Workshops by Willem Foorthuis (Lector Rural Transformation, VHL), Anton Stortelder (Alterra), Landscape Architect (To be announced) and Europe at the edge: Romania. The day will be concluded with a panel debate.
