 Sanitation Choice Involving Stakeholders
Two billion people in developing countries lack adequate sanitation. Growing participation of households and other stakeholders in planning and management of infrastructure is seen as the key to provisions for all. In particular such an approach is necessary where the government is unable to provide sufficient means, as is the case in unplanned and low-income areas.

At the same time the issue of ecologically sustainable systems is on the agenda. The contribution of this thesis consists of the planning method SANCHIS (SANitation CHoice Involving Stakeholders). Stakeholders at the level of a neighborhood or urban district are enabled to jointly find sanitation systems that are appropriate to the situation under study. In the first instance the method has been developed for and tested in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where there are severe problems of pollution and flooding. The joint approach by stakeholders proved to be important for a clear problem analysis, exchange of information, the generation of novel sanitation options and the creation of commitment to the chosen solutions.
