Hydrophilic pollutants in water are a major problem. Hydrophobic compounds (oils) can easily be separated from water, e.g. by extraction, but for hydrophilic compounds this is not so easy. A new means of purification, Solvent-Impregnated Resins, has been investigated. The research focused on the molecular interaction between the pollutant and an extracting agent, that was especially developed for this way of water purification. By means of specific and strong molecular interactions the pollutant molecules can be bound, and subsequently removed from the waterphase together with the extracting agent. This way of separation was investigated for two kinds of hydrophilic pollutants – phenol and MTBE. The results of the research give new insights in the specific molecular interactions (hydrogen bonds), the role of the solvent, and on new methods of modeling of these processes.
