Should I adapt to a new culture, or should I hold onto my own background and roots? This is a basic question every immigrant faces – whether he/she is a permanent immigrant, or a temporary one. Professor Van de Vijver argues that the answer to this question has everything to do with certain characteristics of the immigrant and host cultures. He gives an over view of the psychological reactions that people experience when they get in touch with new cultures. And he describes examples of different strategies to deal with this issue. Among others, he will discuss intercultural friendship.

Prof. dr. Fons J. R. Van de Vijver teaches Cross-Cultural Psychology at Tilburg University, The Netherlands, and North-West University, South Africa. His research focuses, among others, on the differences between cultures.

This lecture is part of an Akademia Honora series on Cross-Cultural Psychology

Akademia Honora is a unique programme within Studium Generale. Throughout the year we reflect on science/ knowledge, society/ practice and the personal sphere in separate Akademia Honora series by exploring in depth the underlying concepts in several sessions. This method provides tools for reflection on practical realities.
