Impact of Improved post-harvest management on food security in developing countries
Information
Various local and international organizations have pointed out that food supplies in many developing countries have reached critical levels. A significant amount of resources are put into efforts to increase yields and food production through improving input supply, better varieties, technical advisory services, credit facilities, etc. It is estimated, however, that worldwide some 30- 40 % of agricultural produce is not reaching the consumer due to post-harvest losses caused by factors such as insect pests, fungal and bacterial diseases, poor logistics, inadequate handling and storage conditions, mechanical damage. Post-harvest losses are particularly high in perishable crops such as fruits and vegetables but are also significant in the major food crops. Due to high temperatures and humidity losses are especially high in tropical and sub-tropical regions.
As part of the course “Agriculture in Transition” we will assess the impact of the application of improved post-harvest technologies on reducing post-harvest losses and increasing food security and quality of food (products) in developing countries. Does post-harvest management receive sufficient attention in food security programmes in comparison to measures related to improving production. Would the impact on food security of each euro invested in improving post-harvest management to reduce post-harvest losses be larger than that invested in technologies to improve yields?
Together with key note speakers, professionals in the area of sustainable agriculture and food security from Latin America, Africa and Asia will share their experiences. Special attention will be paid to the implications for policies related to improving food security.
