MADS domain transcription factors have an important role during the development of flowers, among others by establishing the identities of the different floral organs (sepal, petal, stamen and pistil). Although a lot is already known about how complexes of MADS domain transcription factors are able to regulate their own expression and that of target genes, understanding of the behavior of these transcription factors in the living plant is still limited. In this thesis we therefore investigated the behavior of fluorescently-tagged MADS domain proteins in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana (wall cress or mouse-ear cress) with confocal laser scanning microscopy. In this way I demonstrated, among others, that MADS domain proteins are able to move from cell to cell during floral development. This intercellular transport could play an important part in the control that MADS domain transcription factors have over the floral developmental process.
