2 PhD POSITIONS AND 1 POSTDOC POSITION

Postdoc position (at this moment this postdoc position is only open for replacement candidates) and PhD position at the Laboratory of Microbiology of Wageningen University

Project: Exocellular electron transfer in anaerobic microbial communities

Within the Laboratory of Microbiology anaerobic microbial communities are being studied. Anaerobic microorganisms and consortia are isolated, characterized and their metabolic pathways and key enzymes are investigated. The occurrence and activity of the different microbial groups are being studied with culture-independent molecular tools. Integrated cultivation-dependent and molecular approaches, including state-of-the-art genomic and proteomic technologies, are applied in our research. We have more than 20 years experience with physiological studies on anaerobic bacteria and consortia. Over the years the laboratory has built up an excellent infrastructure to isolate and cultivate strict anaerobes and to perform biochemical and molecular studies on oxygen-sensitive enzymes and proteins.

Project description

In methanogenic environments consortia of different physiological types of microorganisms accomplish the breakdown of complex organic matter in a sequence of reactions. Interspecies electron transfer plays an important role in methanogenic environments. Anaerobic bacteria also have the ability to transfer electrons to insoluble electron acceptors or to inert electrodes in microbial fuel cells. The aim of this research project, financed by CW-NWO, is to study exocellular electron transfer reactions in anaerobic microbial communities. For this research we have vacant positions for a qualified and motivated Post-doc and PhD student. The specific tasks of the Postdoc are to isolate bacteria that are growing in microbial fuel cells and to characterize these bacteria phylogenetically and physiologically. The PhD student will study the physiology of proton-reducing and iron-reducing bacteria in microbial fuels cells and methanogenic cocultures.

Project description

Research in the group of Prof. Jaap Sinninghe Damste of NIOZ has indicated that glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether (GDGT) lipids can be applied as palaeothermometers. Within the Darwin Center of Biogeology we study in collaboration with NIOZ the ecology and physiology of GDGT-lipid-producing bacteria. Acidobacteria are likely candidates, but other soil bacteria may synthesise such lipids as well. For this research we have a vacant position for a qualified and motivated PhD student.
