Also in the USA the coexistence of GM, conventional and organic crops is gaining relevance for policymakers, farmers and other operators in the agro-food chain. This week a report of a workshop on coexistence organised by the Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology and the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture in March 2006 was released. Work shop participants included representatives from state and federal governments; GM, conventional and organic farmers; seed companies, the biotech industry, food processing and marketing firms and academia. Noteworthy, by contrast to the European debate on coexistence, there were no representatives of consumers and environmental advocacy groups present at the workshop.
