A modelling approach for designing robust international food logistics networks
Job description
Agrifood businesses are confronted with a number of developments that have increased the dynamics, complexity and uncertainty for decision makers. The structure and management of food supply networks are influenced by increasing internationalisation, need for high responsiveness and delivery reliability, use of innovative technologies, consumer attention for food safety and sustainability, and so on. Research is needed on the design of robust supply networks; logistics networks that continue to perform well when market or supply conditions change and that can deal with increasing complexity and uncertainty. The main aim of this project is to develop a quantitative modelling approach to support this design process of robust networks taking into account logistical, food quality, sustainability and technological issues. The project will be carried out at the Operations Research and Logistics Group of Wageningen University in close cooperation with the Agrotechnology & Food Sciences Group (WUR-AFSG) and the Agricultural Economics Research Institute (WUR-LEI). Both institutes will provide case studies for the research. The PhD project should result in the successful defence of a PhD dissertation.
Candidate profile
The candidate has completed an academic study in quantitative modelling, preferably in Operations Research or Management Science. He or she is familiar with logistics and (discrete-event) simulation, is very interested in international food supply networks and has good communicative skills. Good skills in English language (both orally and in writing) are self-evident.
