Unit: Forest Ecology and Forest Management Group

Arnold van Gelder, Lourens Poorter and Frank Steck have published an article on the biomechanics of tropical trees: "Wood mechanics, allometry, and life-history variation in a tropical rain forest tree community". Arnold is just starting his PhD at the Forest Ecology and Forest Management Group, but this paper is still based on his MSc thesis. The paper nicely shows how wood density is closely correlated with the wood toughness, mechanical stability, and shade tolerance of tree species. The paper is published in the New Phytologist and the journal dedicated a special research highlight to it, in which our recent Bolivia work is discussed as well by Daniel Falster (Macquarie University, Australia) and put into a broader perspective.
