Theoretically, there is a chance that the lynx will re-establish itself in the Netherlands. But because the animal must cross several highways, it will probably take some time, according to a report by researchers from Alterra and Flemish colleagues in the periodical De Levende Natuur. The Veluwe seems to be the best place for the lynx, which prefers forests with lots of deer. However, if the lynx wants to migrate from the Harz in Germany and the Hautes Fagnes in Belgium to the Veluwe, then it must cross the most dense traffic network of Northwest Europe. Without ecological corridors, the lynx will fall prey to traffic. Moreover, the lynx will be extra vulnerable in the Netherlands because the natural habitats are small.
