PhD Economic and decision making aspects of prevention and control of Classical Swine Fever

Wageningen, 6706 KN, (Gelderland), 40 hours per week

Wageningen University and Researchcentre

Job description

PhD Position

The Business Economics group has over 20-years experience with research on prevention and control of highly contagious diseases such as Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Classical Swine Fever.
The title of the PhD project is: ‘Economic and decision making aspects of German-Dutch cross border prevention and control of Classical Swine Fever’. This PhD project (1) fits within the framework of a larger international research project, and (2) will be carried out together with the Agricultural Economics Research Institute (LEI).
The project aims to improve German-Dutch cross-border control of epizootic diseases, particularly Classical Swine Fever. This should result in improved contingency plans for controlling these diseases, which meet both (1) the demands of the general public with regard to socio-ethical issues and animal welfare, and (2) the economic sustainability of the pig production sector.
The project consists of two parts. First, during a period of 30 months various options for prevention and control will be analysed on their epidemiological and economic impact (e.g. current strategies and strategies based on vaccination). Particular focus will be on the marketing aspects of products originating from vaccinated animals. This will be done by developing and using integrated simulation models with spatial, epidemiological and economic components. Second, during the remaining 18 months a Principal Agent approach will be used to optimize the decision making process in crisis situations from a social planner’s perspective. Particular emphasis will be put on the dynamic aspects of the control of Classical Swine Fever (suddenly changing risks and asymmetric information). The PhD project should result in the successful defence of a PhD dissertation.
