During the Inauguration of the Academic Year of Wageningen UR, guest speaker Kofi Annan received the Silver Medal from Aalt Dijkhuizen, chairperson of the Executive Board. Annan was given the distinction to acknowledge his accomplishments in attaining a sustainable and secure world for all people, regardless of race or religion. Researchers and students alike were inspired by his speech. With visionary diplomacy and empathy for those in need, as Secretary General of the United Nations he initiated activities to end conflicts and begin reconstruction for the civilian population. And this gave hope to Africa. Visionary leaders such as Kofi Annan provide direction to achieving a better and more secure future for our planet, stated Dijkhuizen during the presentation of the medal.
