New leaflets on sustainable crop protection strategies in maize and wheat

Scientists from PRI and PPO and from other research institutions in Europe have collaborated within the EU project ENDURE to produce another two practical leaflets on maize cropping and wheat. 

Recently ENDURE launched the first four examples of its practical guides aimed at agricultural advisers and extension services that deal with integrated pest management strategies.
In preparing all ENDURE leaflets the scientists surveyed existing knowledge, advice and research work in Europe. The best pieces of advice and the best decision support systems have been selected and are highlighted in the leaflets.

The advice in the leaflets can assist farmers in reducing the amount and frequency of fungicides in potato production and wheat and herbicides in maize cropping.

Potato:

• Reducing primary inoculum sources of late blight
• Using decision support systems to combat late blight
• Fungicides for tackling late blight
• Using cultivar resistance to reduce inputs against late blight

Wheat:

• Using cultivar resistance to reduce fungicide input in wheat

Maize:

• Maize cropping with less herbicide
