Avian Influenza (AI) is currently one of the main threats to veterinary health, with worldwide implications for trade and also human health. Because the Netherlands has a significant role in international travel and trade, and is an important producer and exporter of poultry products, the country has an interest in assisting avoid outbreaks and spread of AI elsewhere. An appropriate and orchestrated reaction from relevant authorities is important in the event of an AI outbreak. The Dutch embassies and representations, especially the agricultural counsellors have a keen interest in the issue. To address this requirement, the Chief Veterinary Officer and the Directorate Food Quality and Animal Health have commissioned the current brief.
