Research at Wageningen University and the PhD Programme are organised in and facilitated by seven Graduate Schools. Each Graduate School has its own mission and research themes. The research groups of Wageningen University participate in one or more Graduate Schools, but researchers of other Dutch Universities and research institutes can also be affiliated with a Graduate School.
The Graduate Schools of Wageningen University are formally organised in the ‘Wageningen Graduate Schools’ (WGS). Several Graduate Schools also have participants from other national universities and institutes.
The Graduate Schools of Wageningen University have three main tasks:
- To stimulate and co-ordinate the development of a coherent university research programme within the mission of the Graduate School
- To safeguard, monitor and stimulate the quality and progress of academic research (PhD students, Postdocs and staff)
- To co-ordinate, develop and facilitate post-graduate education

Researchers, postdocs and PhD students are required to participate in a graduate school. The Graduate Schools of Wageningen University have been accredited by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and are therefore subject to quality control.
