Easier entry for ‘glass eels’ thanks to openings in lock gates
European eels spend the first 2 years of their life being swept 5,000 km by the Gulf stream until they reach our coastal waters in the form of transparent ‘glass eels’ measuring 7cm. They are prevented from entering our waterways by locks, but ‘glass eels’ can be washed through openings in the lock gates by the current.
