Microplastics and Nanoplastics

Wageningen University & Research conducts research on microplastics and nanoplastics in the sea, in freshwater and in marine and freshwater organisms. In this dossier you will find news and background research on the effects of plastics in the sea and fresh water, ranging from the size of a grain of sand up to 1000 times smaller.

What are microplastics and nanoplastics?

Microplastics are tiny plastic particles that may end up in the environment. The size of these particles are microscopic in size: 50 µm - 5 mm (0.05-5mm) (Andrady 2011).

Nanoplastics are plastic particles that are 1,000 times smaller than an algal cell.
