In the covenant ‘onbedwelmd slachten volgens religieuze riten' (i.e. slaughtering without stunning according to religious rituals’) of June 2012 the government, slaughterhouses and religious organisations agreed to improve slaughtering so that it is consistent with Islamic or Jewish traditions. The practical implementation of this is related to changing regulations.
For example, from 1 January 2013 the 'EU Council Regulation on the protection of animals at the time of killing' has been in force. This brought stricter requirements for the stunning of chickens in a water bath. The stunning of poultry for slaughter can be done in different ways.
