Would you like to improve your basic speaking and listening skills in English? The focus of the course is on practical skills, but ample attention is also given to English culture.
Classes take place on the Wageningen University & Research Campus, in the Forum building.
Basic English is a course for Wageningen University & Research Language Policy, and is for all employees who want to acquire a solid foundation in English in a short amount of time. The course is also open to external participants.
Basic English: A1/A2 CEFR
The following topics are included in the course:
- Providing personal information
- Explaining yourself to others: asking and answering questions
- Establishing grammar, vocabulary foundation
- Practising pronunciation
- Reading and writing basics
This course runs for 12 classes. There will be 1 weekly class of 1 hour and 30 minutes. In addition to the classes, you will be spending 2 to 3 hours on homework each week.

If you are taking the course in the context of Wageningen University & Research Language Policy, your skills will be tested in the final class. If you pass this test, you will receive a Wageningen in’to Languages certificate. Should you not pass, you will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance (providing you have attended enough classes).

Prior to registration: placement test
To make sure everyone is placed in the right course, new course participants are obliged to take the free Oxford Online Placement Test. This course needs a score of at least 40. Please note: registration cannot be confirmed without a placement test result. Arrange an appointment through our online calendar.
