Frequently Asked Questions


I have sent you an email but I do not have an answer yet. What can I do?

A: We answer all emails as soon as possible. If you do not have an answer yet, it means we are still looking for the appropriate information. We want to answer all emails carefully and this process is time-consuming.

I’m currently following the last year of my BSc degree. I will graduate in June. Can I apply to EM-SANF?

A: Yes. Please enclose to your application the transcripts for the first two years of your BSc (or three years if your BSc is in four years) and a document from your university stating that you are currently following the last year of your BSc and the expected date of graduation.

In the case that you are selected, you must complete the BSc before the start of the program (end of August). This means that if you fail to complete your BSc at the expected date of graduation, your selection will be cancelled.

My scientific background is not in Animal Sciences. Can I apply anyway?

A: When assessing the applications, we will review your background to assess your scientific knowledge and make sure you will be able to follow the EM-SANF course. EM-SANF students are selected among candidates with a BSc in Animal Science, Biology (Zoology related), Veterinary Sciences or related fields with a number of prerequisites (chemistry, mathematics, statistics) with a minimum Grade Average Point of 70%. The selection is very competitive and we only take the very best students. We welcome candidates with various scientific backgrounds, to make the selected cohort as diverse and enriching for one another as possible.

I would like to contact current EM-SANF students. Is it possible?

A: Yes this would be possible. You can send us a request by email, so we can put you through to a current EM-SANF student.


I do not have a TOEFL or IELTS certificate, but have followed courses in English. Do I meet the language requirements?

A: We prefer a proof of English language proficiency by TOEFL or IELTS test certificates. There are some exceptions for this rule:

  • If you are a native speaker (from Australia, Ireland, Canada (except those educated at universities in Quebec), New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States of America).

  • If you have worked/studied for a period of at least one year in an English speaking country (see countries above). In this case, please submit a certificate or other proof stating this fact. If you can add a TOEFL or IELTS certificate, this can add value to your application.

  • Nationals of one of the following countries, Bangladesh, Botswana, Bhutan, Cameroon, Cyprus, Ghana, Guyana, India, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Malaysia, Namibia, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, The Philippines, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe who have completed their Bachelor or Master degree in their homecountry are strongly encouraged to submit a sufficient result of an English proficiency test. If this is not possible, a signed statement from the university that the medium of instruction during the complete Bachelor’s programme they followed was English is required.

  • If you have followed a program where the language of education was not English, but you have followed English Language courses as part of your curriculum or in a private or other institute, then this does not meet the criteria. You will need to take a TOEFL or IELTS test.

My university or referee wants to send documents to the EM-SANF secretariat. What should I do?

A: The secretariat can receive documents by email or regular mail, not by fax. We prefer to obtain the documents by email: scan the document and send it to emsanf@wur.nl (or ask your referee to scan the document and send it). By regular mail: send the document to the EM-SANF Consortium Office at the address as mentioned in Contact. All documents sent separately (not with your application file) should bear as reference your online application number or they will not be added to your application file.
