The societal mission of the chair group Nutrition and Disease within the Division of Human Nutrition is ‘to decrease the risk of (chronic) disease and improve the health of those with a disease through better nutrition’. Our scientific mission is ‘to conduct interdisciplinary observational and experimental research in humans on nutrition in disease aetiology, during treatment and for prognosis’.
The chair group comprises a team of experts in the field of epidemiology, nutrition, physiology, biostatistics, medical biology, and chemistry. We conduct observational epidemiological studies, experimental studies in individuals at (high-)risk or with (preclinical) disease, and meta-analyses. Novel methods of dietary assessment and data-analysis, as well as (bio)markers of exposure, function, metabolism, genetic susceptibility, body composition, and (pre-) disease are being developed, evaluated and used in these studies.
We define 4 research themes:
- Disease aetiology and prevention
The role of lifestyle factors in the aetiology of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer.
- Clinical care and disease prognosis
Clinically orientated research focused on short-and long-term recovery of chronic and acute diseases through healthy dietary patterns and well-accepted nutritious foods combined with physical activity.
- Exposure assessment and data-analysis
Design, evaluation, and implementation of novel (e.g. web-based) dietary assessment tools relevant to applications in both scientific research and advice in clinical practice. Implementation of novel data analysis techniques in observational and experimental studies, and methods to combine data from different sources.
- Translating evidence to the clinic and community
This includes meta-analyses for advice to the general public, implementation of dietary guidelines in clinical care, andeducation of health professionals.
