iGEM Wageningen University

iGEM is the international Genetically Engineered Machine competition for student teams around the world. It is a yearly international synthetic biology competition for university students based on standard biological parts.

In iGEM, the teams come up with creative solutions to solve real-world challenges covering a diverse range of topic areas: food, energy, medicine, environment, bio manufacturing, etc. After carrying out the project, the best teams are offered the opportunity to present their work at the world jamboree. In the past years more than 300 teams from 41 different countries (undergraduate and overgraduate division) subscribed to iGEM with in total 4800 participants.

iGEM in Wageningen

The Wageningen iGEM team is hosted and supervised by the Laboratories for Systems and Synthetic Biology (SSB) and Microbiology (MIB) and have been very successful in the past. In 2014 and in 2016, the Wageningen iGEM team became 2nd worldwide in the overgraduate division! Furthermore, since its first participation in 2011 it always met all the requirements to qualify for the gold iGEM medal.

The Laboratories of Systems and Synthetic Biology and Microbiology are looking for motivated and enthusiastic students who do not fear to be challenged. Being part of the iGEM team is demanding but it is an extraordinary experience. Because Synthetic Biology is an interdisciplinary endeavour, it does not matter if you are more interested in mathematical modelling or designing and performing experiments or human outreach or fundraising. We will need many different types of talents.

Previous Wageningen iGEM teams

In previous years the Wageningen iGEM teams have been very succesfull. Since the first participation all teams met the requirements for a gold medal.
