Vision

In nearly every industry, systems become increasingly smarter and interconnected as a result of the rapid technological developments such as communication and network technology, cloud computing, future internet, robotics, system engineering, software engineering, information technology and knowledge engineering. Smart systems incorporate functions of sensing, actuation, communication, and control in order to describe and analyse a situation, and make decisions based on available data in a predictive or adaptive manner, thereby performing smart actions. Interconnected systems, or system of systems, enable the pooling of the resources and capabilities to create a new, more complex system that offers more functionality and performance than simply the sum of the constituent systems. The interconnection of systems including large scale of devices and sensors, and the increased smartness of systems, generate incessant streams of data so large and complex that traditional data processing applications fall short in capturing, storing, visualizing, analysing and processing this data. Smart systems and system of systems engineering is a critical research discipline that provide many new opportunities for innovation and growth in society. However, currently the available concepts, processes, tools and design methods are incomplete

Mission

We aim to contribute to the state-of-the-art of smart systems and system of systems engineering to support innovations in the life sciences application domains.


Objectives

In alignment with our vision and mission we have the following objectives:

  •  To identify, analyse and understand developments and challenges in life sciences from a smart  systems and system of systems engineering perspective.

  •  Develop concepts, methods and tools for smart systems and system of systems engineering for the life sciences application domains. This will be realized from both a technical and socio-technical perspective.
  • Apply and evaluate developed approaches for smart systems and system of systems engineering to the life science application domains



Research Approach



Our main research strategy will be based on the so-called industry-as-laboratory approach in which we aim to carry out our activities through direct collaboration with the relevant groups at Wageningen University and research centres as well as the corresponding industrial partners.

Based on this approach research problems are acquired after an active collaboration with the industry, (e.g. industrial partners in a research project). This is realized by actively analysing existing life sciences application domains which can be done either reactively or pro-actively. Based on this analysis important research problems will be derived that are also relevant from the state-of-the-art perspective. After agreement on relevant research problems research is carried out interactively with the corresponding problem domain stakeholders. During the research lifetime constant feedback can be provided by the application domain. On the other hand early research results can be quickly validated within a real industrial context.
