On Friday March 3, the second meeting of the Dutch Arbovirus Research Network (DARN) was organised by the University Medical Center Groningen.
DARN was established in 2016 by WUR and UMCG scientists with the objective to bring together research groups working on arthropods (insects and ticks) and arthropod-borne (arbo) viruses. We enjoyed excellent presentations from young scientists from Leiden, Groningen, Nijmegen, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Wageningen and Lelystad. In addition, a wonderful keynote lecture was provided by Dr. Andres Merits of the University of Tartu, Estonia. From Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR), Rianka Vloet presented her work on the vector competence of Dutch mosquitoes for Rift Valley fever virus (picture) and Piet van Rijn on the role of non-essential viral proteins in the transmission of Orbiviruses. At the end of this exciting day, we announced that the DARN meeting of 2018 will be held at WBVR in Lelystad.
