MOOC: Growing our future food: crops CSD&FS happily announces edX MOOC (Massive Online Open Cources) on how to feed mankind in future decades without exhausting planetary reserves. During the first edition early this year nearly 10,000 students from over 165 countries have taken this course. Lecture: 65 years of scientific research for food and nutrition security in a warming planet CSD&FS proudly supports this exciting lecture by Prof M.S. Swaminathan (88), Indian geneticist and international administrator, and also known as the "Father of the Green Revolution in India".
Prof. Swaminathan is the founder and chairman of the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation. His stated vision is to rid the world of hunger and poverty. Swaminathan is an advocate of moving India to sustainable development, especially using environmentally sustainable agriculture, sustainable food security and the preservation of biodiversity, which he calls an "evergreen revolution". He did his Postdoc on potato genetics at Wageningen in early 1950’s. From 1972 to 1979 he was director general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. He was minister of Agriculture from 1979 to 1980. He served as director general of the International Rice Research Institute (1982–88) and became president of the IUCN in 1988. In 1999, Time magazine placed him in the 'Time 20' list of most influential Asian people of the 20th century.

Workshop Agriculture by Design “This is not what we intended” is an often-expressed notion in society when evaluating the impacts of our food and farming systems on the environment. We certainly did not intend to deplete soil, destroy soil ecosystems, increase erosion, or pollute water with our agricultural practices. But what was it that we did intend? Our intention was to increase productivity, protect crops from pests, provide nutrients to increase yield – produce more food for the world’s population. So what can we do differently to avoid the unintended detrimental effects while still achieving the main goal – feeding the mankind with healthy, nutritious and enjoyable food? How can we shape our food production, processing and distribution systems to produce positive outcomes for both society and ecosystems, like healthy food, green spaces, clean water, and viable rural communities, instead of having to deal with negative impacts?

On 29 September Wageningen University Campus is hosting an event on food waste in front of the Orion building. There will be a warm, fee lunch for 500 people, made from food that would normally be wasted! Mind you, a carrot that would not win a beauty contest is still nutritious and delicious to eat.
At the event, you will also get tips on how to avoid food waste. Hunger defeated? Long-term dynamics of global food security
27 September - 3 October 2013, Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands. The post-graduate course is integrated with the First International Conference on Global Food Security (Noordwijkerhout, 29 September - 2 October 2013). It starts three days before the conference and ends with a final synthesis day on the 3rd of October. Participants of the course also participate in the conference. They meet for discussions during the conference and prepare a presentation for the conference closing session.
