Making agriculture work for food and nutrition security

Despite the world-wide increase of food availability 1 out of 3 people are malnourished due to undernourishment, micronutrient deficiencies and/or overweight. Evidence shows that malnutrition has life-long detrimental impacts on learning capacity, productivity and income-generating potential of populations.
The sustainable development goals aim to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture by year 2030.
Agriculture plays a key role in the provision of food and nutrition security. But agricultural programs and policies do not automatically lead to better nourished populations. In some cases these programs and policies can even be detrimental to the nutritional situation of vulnerable groups. Agricultural programs and policies need to take nutrition outcomes into account.

Ensuring nutritional impact of agricultural programs and policies

Making agricultural programs nutrition sensitive

Recent research shows that improving nutrition from the health domain only nor from the agricultural domain only brings sufficient progress, but that progress will be highest at the intersection of agriculture, health and nutrition. Agricultural programs and policies need to become nutrition sensitive to increase the availability and accessibility and consumption of diverse and nutritious foods.
This course focus on how agricultural programs and policies can become nutrition sensitive to achieve the nutrition objectives. In addition, we will explore the different agricultural pathways leading to food and nutrition security. Experts will facilitate the course to provide you with the knowledge and skills to design and strengthen the implementation of nutrition sensitive agricultural programs and policies. The course is highly interactive, building on the participant’s own experiences and cases.

Course objectives
Upon completion of the course you will:

  • understand the definitions of food systems, value chains, food security, nutrition security and their interconnectedness;
  • be able to apply conceptual frameworks to ensure nutrition sensitive agricultural development programs and policies;
  • have strengthen your competence in the design and implementation of agricultural development programs and policies to enhance the impact on nutrition.

Entry requirements
Applicants should have a BSc or equivalent in the field of agriculture, food and nutrition security, health, or a related field, and have at least three years of professional experience in governmental or local non-governmental organisation as a policy or planning officer, or a managing or co-ordinating position in one of the field related to the course. Proficiency in English is required.
