Fresh logistics

Clients in (inter)national agro chains have specific wishes and demands related to product quality, which are also subject to change. Guaranteeing quality requires a swift and appropriate response from the entire chain. Wageningen Food & Biobased Research helps companies in the chain to optimise fresh logistics.

Logistical links and product quality

Every link in the logistic chain has a huge impact on the total performance of the entire chain. A quality assurance is more difficult to give as an individual link than when the entire chain has the same goal. Moreover, better logistic alignment between the links makes the entire chain more cost effective and sustainable. Together with individual or multiple chain parties, Wageningen Food & Biobased Research determines which factors in the logistics of the chain influence product quality by looking at issues such as physical transport, packaging, the availability of product and chain information, quality control items, stocks and ordering systems.

Wageningen Food & Biobased Research has knowledge both of logistics and fresh products. This unique combination means we are able to optimise the logistic model of the chain, for example through modal shifts, i.e. shifting road transport to rail or water.

Holistic approach

Our clients demand innovative and creative solutions within fresh logistics, which is why Wageningen Food & Biobased Research looks at the total logistics of agro chains in a holistic way. Together with clients, we determine where changes in individual links and between links will be most effective and how end consumers will experience these improvements. Examples include the development of new chain logistics models, the optimisation of stock by taking shelf life into account, and demand-prediction or chain-simulation models.
