dr.ing. MPH (Maikel) Verouden

Reseacher, Lecturer

After obtaining my BSc. (associated title in ing.) in Environmental Analytical Chemistry from HAN University of Applied Sciences I have worked for a couple of years at the Development & Innovation Department of TAUW Laboratories in Deventer. Having the feeling there was more in life, I continued my studies focussing on Process Analysis & Chemometrics in the department of Chemical Engineering at the Univeristy of Amsterdam. After obtaining my MSc. in Chemistry with specialization Process Analysis & Chemometrics, I was asked to fill a PhD Candidate position in Biosystems Data Analysis with prof.dr. Age K. Smilde at the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences of the University of Amsterdam.

My PhD research involved the incorporation of prior knowledge in the analysis of microbial metabolomics data. Having a background in data analysis and modeling prof.dr. M. Joost Teixeira de Mattos from the Molecular Microbial Physiology group of prof.dr. Klaas J. Hellingwerf (Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences, University of Amsterdam) persuaded me to join him as Post-Doctoral Researcher in a Systems Biology of Micro-Organisms project for modeling the respiratory chain of Escherichia coli. After a year and seven months I gave up this position, due to changes in the group causing a very insecure future for the project to stay on the same path as initially started on.

In 2014 I joined the chairgroup Mathematical and Statistical Methods (MAT) from Wageningen University as part-time teacher in Statistics. A year later a part-time position at the business unit (BU) Biometris of Wageningen Research was added. Currently I am full-time employed at Wageningen Universtiy & Research, 14h/week as Lecturer and 24 h/week as Researcher. Within Biometris, one Wagenngen merger of MAT and BU Biometris, I am also IT contact person, where I act as liason with FB-IT, HPC Anunna and as first contact for colleagues with issues involving network, software and hardware issues. Since March 2021 I act as representative for all IT contact persons of  the Plant Science Group (PSG ) on the WUR IT User Council.

My current teaching activities involve introductory statistics and teaching R to mainly graduate and PhD students. In research I focus on R package development in statistical genetics within the H3 consortium. One of my major projects is the BrAPI R package, which is an implementation of the Breeding Application Programming Interface (see //brapi.org/) in the R free software environment for statistical computing and graphics.
