The Week of the Circular Economy runs from 16 to 24 January. Wageningen University & Research has developed three videos for nu.nl, focused on our work in the field of sustainable resources for materials from algae, dandelions and sugar beet. From sugar beet to soda bottle
Vegetable residual material, part of biomass, is currently used mainly for food and animal feed. But residual products still remain after processing, such as the pulp left over from sugar beet. Interestingly, this pulp can be used to make plastic as Jacco van Haveren explains.

Algae: the green gold
The global population is growing and so, therefore, is the demand for energy, chemicals and products such as plastic, soap, cleaning products, paint and adhesive. To meet this demand, we have to switch to an economy in which the raw materials for these products comes from sustainable, renewable resources. Microalgae are an example of one of the most sustainable solutions.

Making car tyres from dandelions
We can preserve rainforests in the future by producing car tyres from natural rubber. Dandelions are an important new resource for this natural rubber. Ingrid van der Meer, scientist at Wageningen University & Research, discusses the benefits of this ‘dandelion rubber’.
