Animal Breeding and Genetics (2 weeks)

“Food security in a changing world – how can animal breeders contribute?” is the key question during the Summer course Animal Breeding and Genetics. The course is meant for students who would like to learn more about various issues that are important for the implementation of sustainable breeding programs for farm animals, with a focus on both developed and developing countries and from a global perspective.

Course Introduction

The "Summer course Animal Breeding and Genetics" mainly deals with various issues that are important for the implementation of sustainable breeding programs for farm animals. Attention will be paid to situations in both developed and developing countries in the context of global food security.

What you will learn

After the course, students are able to:
- Understand the concept of global sustainable food security
- Identify the competing claims with respect to sustainable food security
- Explain how animal production can contribute to sustainable food security
- Explain how animal breeding can contribute to sustainable food security
- Have a clear understanding that animal breeding in developing countries is different from animal breeding in developed countries
- Conceptualize a research program that contributes to food security and meets the local environment and market conditions

The course related directly to problem solving and it also exposed me to challenges I might face on the field. It was explicit and worthwhile. I am glad I joined and I learnt a lot of things.
The practicals and group works were very relevant and supportive. The teachers were also very helpful and displayed high level of competences. Really inspiring.

Course Design

The course consists of four types of education: lectures, case studies, literature discussions and a individual assignment.
Scientists with extensive experience in this domain give lectures and supervise students during their case studies.

Requirements

Basic knowledge of animal breeding and genetics is expected.
