Despite general progress in global wellbeing, stark inequalities in food security and nutrition remain extant. How can we better understand who is at risk of hunger, malnutrition and food insecurity? And what are the consequences for people’s lives? A life course perspective offers a lens for assessing and explaining food use and nutrition trajectories, and their effects on life course outcomes, within the changing social networks and wider socioeconomic and cultural contexts of people’s lives.

Since January 2014 Hilde has been appointed as a full professor and chair of the Sociology of Consumption and Households Group. She is a member of the Young Academy of the KNAW. Her research interests concern social inequality, health and well-being, life course dynamics, and intergenerational transmission. Currently, she works with a VIDI-grant on the project “The Power of the Family: Family Influences on Long-Term Fertility Decline in Europe, 1850-2010”.
