TWIN-SHIME: the Simulator of Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem explained

The Simulator of Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (SHIME®) is a dynamic in vitro simulation platform for digestion of food. This research facility offers opportunities for research fields as, e.g., microbiology, food safety, digestion, product design, food chemistry and human and animal nutrition.

A seminar organized by Shared Research Facilities and Food Quality and Design will highlight the opportunities of this research device. The developer and manufacturer ProDigest will outline the research possibilities of the SHIME® technology platform. Wageningen University PhD student Jonna Koper will explain her research using the newly acquired TWIN-SHIME. After the presentations there will be ample opportunity for questions and meeting the experts and fellow researchers.

Twin-Shime

The SHIME® platform, a succession of five reactors, each imitating a different segment of the human gastrointestinal tract and the colon, can provide detailed information of the fermentation profile. Two parallel running reactors (TWIN) make it possible to study e.g., probiotic effects of selected microorganisms, prebiotic effects of selected food ingredients or foods, shift in gut microbiota upon different dietary patterns or antibiotic treatment, bioavailability of micronutrients and macronutrients, and the kinetics of nutrients and phytochemical metabolism by the gut microbiota.
