Student Andrei Terci - BSc Food Technology

Andrei Terci is from Romania and is a third year BFT student.

Food science is something that's highly applicable, satisfying, stimulating and multidisciplinary

Choosing Food Technology

"In my last year of high school, COVID struck and all educational systems went down. So I took a gap year to really explore what I'm looking for. I was always very interested in food sciences, and in what's going on behind the scenes in food. I had a little series on social media, where I would make a recipe from the start and I would explain what happens. During cooking, at certain temperatures and these sorts of things. I would study things myself beforehand, so I would know that no one can tell me I'm wrong. Then I went exploring and I chose to study food. So I said to myself, ‘OK, if I study food, I should at least find the best place to study it.’ And I just looked it up and saw that WUR was the one of the best places to study food tech and the closest one in Europe."

(International) Student Life Experience

"There are people from all backgrounds and all nationalities, so you expect differences, of course. But you find common ground as well. Like I can find someone that was born on completely the opposite side of the earth to me, and I can still have similarities with them. Maybe we have the same passions, or maybe we have the same kind of skills, so we can relate to each other. And especially when you move away from your own country, that's one of the first things you look for, discovering this common ground."

Academic Atmosphere

"WUR is great because there are so many courses, there’s something for everyone. I really like fermentation nowadays and I'm enjoying working with machinery and the engineering part more. But I have friends that are more into flavour chemistry or more into beverages. So people do have a niche and there's always someone that can teach you a bit more. It's very humbling. This year I joined the Nicolas Appert study association, and I’m in the Fermentation Committee. There I have found people with the same passions at different levels, which is very humbling."

Goals after graduation

"After finishing with my bachelors, I'd be interested in applying for the WUR European Master’s in Food Studies. I’m also interested in sustainable food process engineering and fermentation biotechnology. My main goal would be to become a teacher or a professor, so I'd also be interested in later pursuing a PhD."

Take home message

"Food technology is something that you can to apply right away in daily life. For many of my courses, I could almost directly apply it in the kitchen afterwards. So it’s something that's highly applicable and satisfying to study. For protentional international students, coming to study at WUR will show you a lot about yourself that you may not have been aware of, that you haven't explored. That feels really satisfying."
