Joko Tri Rubiyanto - MSc Food Quality Management

“In my past, I embarked on an incredible journey in Indonesia, collaborating with small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the pursuit of food product development. I saw that there was a lot of potential in Indonesia, like agricultural products. But also, that a lot of those products are wasted. For example because of the shape, it cannot be sold on the market, so farmers decide to throw it away. Because of that, I decided that it would be good for me to improve my knowledge on food, and food innovation.”

The combination of quality and logistics is very unique, and really useful!

"My background is in B.Eng of Agro-industrial Technology, and there I already learned about the techno-managerial approach. I was really into it at the time, and it was hard for me to find a programme that went into that approach in the way I wanted. I looked around in Australia, in the US, UK and also in Europe, and finally I found out about the Master of Food Quality Management. I really wanted to learn how this approach can help companies, including SMEs, develop high quality food products, so that is why I joined."

"Once I picked the programme, I picked the specialisation in logistics. First of all, I love mathematics. Aside from that, I figured that the route ‘from farm to fork’ is just very long. To make sure that people get enough food, we need to make sure that the supply chain is good. I wanted to go into that, to get to know a new perspective on agri-food systems, by studying the logistics of those systems."

The programme

"Some of the courses on the logistics side of my programme are really industrial, talking about deliveries, inventory control, et cetera. Some others nicely connect to food quality, how to make sure that food products have a good quality along the entire supply chain. That last type of courses matched what I expected and wanted most. In the end, I think MFQ with the logistics-specialisation is very unique, because I have never seen this combination of food quality and the supply chain in any other programme. It is really useful to look at quality along a supply chain, so you actually have the full view."

"I also liked the general courses in my programme, like Food Law. I had no experience with law, and did not actually know how the EU law worked. It was really challenging for me, but I thought it was really nice to learning something new. This experience actually led me to learn more, and because of that I am now selected in the Youth Policy Board in the World Food Forum by the UN FAO (United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization). So the course of Food Law is actually changing my life!"

Future jobs

"I will now be starting my thesis, on the modelling of sustainable diets. I just
started, but it seems to be very interesting. In half a year, I will be starting an internship, and I started looking for possibilities a bit. I would like to work on food supply chains, for example for humanitarian organisations, NGOs, or even multinational company. I like travelling and I am still young, so I would also like to do my internship somewhere I have not been before, like a country in Africa, the Middle East or Asia. My journey in the Master of Food Quality Management has been nothing short of transformative, and I am eager to see where it leads me in the future."
