Great interest in Armidale Animal Breeding Summer Course ‘Genotype by environment interaction in breeding programs’
The annual Armidale Breeding Summer Course was held from 30 January until 3 February 2017. The subject of the course was ‘Genotype by environment interaction in breeding programs’ and taught by dr Piter Bijma and dr Han Mulder from Animal Breeding and Genomics.
In total, 50 people attended the course from different countries and disciplines, mainly animal (80%) and plant breeding (20%). The large number of participants shows the great interest in this topic and reflects the importance of genotype by environment interaction in animal and plant breeding due to the great diversity in environments on this side of the world.
The course was hosted by prof. Julius van der Werf of the Animal Breeding group at the University of New England in Armidale, Australia. The course covered quantitative genetic and statistical aspects of GxE, stability and uniformity in animal and plant breeding. Also GxE in human genetics were discussed in a lecture and practical given by Dr Sang Hong Lee.
